explosion and dan simon is on the scene. why are you able to tell us? >> reporter: we were near what we believe was ground zero and it was just total devastation. there were many homes level them from us. fire crews dealing with very first flames. we believe this fire was caused by some kind of gas explosion and the explosion was so fierce that we saw pieces of concrete 100 yards away from ground zero. it was unbelievable. this is going to be a long night for firefighters. originally, rose mary, there were reports that a plan may have crashed into the hillside here in san bruno. those reports were false. when you got to the scene, you can understand why some people were under that impression because it looked like something had gone down here. it was that began that massive. as you said, we are dealing with at least one fatality but the fact that it happened just after 6:00 local time when people were coming home from work, strong odds that you will be seeing more people injured and perhaps more fatalities. >> that is the tragedy of this story. you mentioned that the thinking that this
